Diamonds-Girls Best Friends

After slipping the password “diamonds” to the front desk concierge, they were ushered in to a back room filled with treats (some edible & some to admire) while Cameron imparted his valuable knowledge to us. So listen up, ladies. Because this is what we’ve learnt.

Still trying to digest the scones with jam & cream as I write this…Junior fashion editor Peter, market editor Anouk & i have returned from a diamond master class over high tea at the Observatory Hotel. they were invited by Cameron Marks: fourth-generation jeweller, diamond expert & owner of the historic Percy Marks.

Blue diamonds are actually the rarest & most high priced but are largely ignored for not being as “pretty” as their fairer cousin, the pink diamond.

Carat size actually comes third in order of importance (after cut & clarity) when judging the quality of a diamond. Effectively this means bigger is not always better.

The least important of the 4 Cs (some diamond lingo for you) is colour – the whiter the diamond the more high priced it is.

The average a man spends on a diamond for his fiance is $10,000 – & lots of receive a trade up later in life three times they’ve made their fortune. (I couldn’t help but wonder if there have been any trade-downs due to the GFC? Possibly some wives have found theirs missing altogether!)

So ladies, get in speedy or you may miss out. you are armed with knowledge now, so go forth & apply some pressure. Check out the 3 carat Christina ring from Percy Marks, above, for inspiration. As you can see, it got Anouk & I excited.

as shocking is the other global crisis – they are a fast approaching a world shortage of diamonds. they may soon run out altogether.
